book review
Open
Andre Agassi
What a ride! Before reading this book I was not really interested in autobiographies. I had a preconceived idea that they would be either depressing or boring. This book has changed all that.
Contrary to media reports, Open, does not revolve around Andre's drug experiences. Really, that part takes up one or two pages. It is an honest and often painful glimpse into the life of a character we all thought we knew. Behind the outrageous hair-do's (or don'ts) and rebellious antics, there is a complicated man desperately trying to please his father. From the start to finish, Andre admits to hating tennis. It was only the violent urging of a passionate father that drove him to succeed.
This is a fascinating read. There is a 'God' element in his story from his friendship with a pastor to his love of the Trinity. In his victories and failures, Andre is completely honest. As with all stories, 'truth' has to be taken with a pinch of salt but ultimately, it is a book that reads like a book of fiction.
It is an easy read, full of drama and intrigue. It will change the way you watch tennis.
