Robin Hood

(MA) Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, directed by Ridley Scott

Let me start by saying this is not a kid's film. Do not mistake it for the fluffy Disney version. This is Ridley Scott at his adult only best!

This version of the Robin Hood tale begins before Robin becomes an outlaw. He has been fighting alongside King Richard in the Crusades which has left him bitter. His return to England sees his homeland in a state of civil war. The ruthless King John is In the middle of this madness and his advisor, Godfrey,  unleashes anarchy on England. We meet all the regular characters: Maid Marion, Friar Tuck, Little John, Will Scarlet and the Sheriff of Nottingham. But this version is nothing like previous depictions.

Despite some bad press, this is actually a solid, well made film. The story is fascinating; as it is not the familiar Robin Hood tale the action is not predictable. The characters are great. Russell Crowe as Robin Hood oozes masculinity, Cate Blanchett plays Marion beautifully with fire and sophistication. There are some epic action scenes and exciting duels. All in all, this film was a surprising two thumbs up for this reviewer.
